The Richelieu valley, one village at a time

The Montérégie we serve follows a river. To the south, Chambly and its basin; at the foot of the mountain, Mont-Saint-Hilaire and Otterburn Park; along Route 116 and the rail line, McMasterville and Saint-Basile-le-Grand. Then the riverside villages string out along the chemin des Patriotes — Saint-Mathias-sur-Richelieu, Saint-Marc-sur-Richelieu, Saint-Charles-sur-Richelieu, Saint-Denis-sur-Richelieu — all the way to Saint-Ours and Sorel-Tracy, where the Richelieu meets the St. Lawrence. To the east, Saint-Hyacinthe; upstream, Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu and its five sectors; to the west, Saint-Rémi and its black-earth fields. Megabac was born at the far end of that valley.

Crossing the river here is not free. There is no bridge in Saint-Denis-sur-Richelieu: the link to the far bank is the Handfield ferry, from April to December. No bridge either in Saint-Charles-sur-Richelieu, where the seasonal ferry at the end of rue de l'Union is no substitute for a truck — it arrives via Belœil or beyond. In Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, by-law 0278 restricts heavy vehicles on the Gouin bridge to protect the structure. So the bank your address sits on changes the route, and the route changes the hour: that is exactly what we go over with you on the phone.

Your MRC's ecocentre, and where it stops

The Montérégie we serve straddles several MRCs, and the door is not the same from one municipality to the next. Rouville runs two: Marieville and Saint-Césaire. Saint-Rémi has one inside the town itself.

The quota, though, runs out fast. In La Vallée-du-Richelieu the free allowance is 12 m³ a year — about 15.7 cubic yards, calculated from the figures the MRC publishes — while a single 20 cubic yard dumpster holds 15.3. In Rouville, the six annual construction-waste visits of roughly 0.4 m³ each do not add up to 3 m³: a 10 yard holds 7.6, a 40 yard 30.6. For a car trunk, the ecocentre is the right answer; for a job site, the dumpster remains the only continuous route.

And for a business, the door is simply shut: « Industries, commerces et institutions non autorisés », writes the MRC de La Vallée-du-Richelieu, which also turns away lettered trucks; the MRC de Pierre-De Saurel keeps its site for residents and accepts nothing coming out of a commercial business. In several municipalities here the by-law goes further and requires the dumpster on the job site — in Chambly, in Saint-Marc-sur-Richelieu, in Saint-Basile-le-Grand, and in Saint-Ours for a demolition.
