A region that exists on no administrative map

People say “the South Shore” the way they would say a city name, and that is where the surprises start: the territory is carved into four structures that do not line up. The Longueuil agglomeration brings together five cities — Longueuil, Boucherville, Brossard, Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville and Saint-Lambert — and handles waste management as a shared competence; according to the City of Boucherville, the agglomeration has close to 459,000 residents and has existed in its current form since 2006. The MRC de Roussillon, which describes itself as the most populous MRC in Quebec, groups eleven, with rural land over more than 70% of its territory. The MRC de Marguerite-D'Youville has six — 82,786 residents in 2023 across 348.48 km² — and the MRC de La Vallée-du-Richelieu, thirteen.

What that means for a dumpster is very concrete: there is no “South Shore” permit, no “South Shore” drop-off centre and no regional snow-removal by-law. The name of the document you need to place a box on the street, how long it takes to get it, which drop-off centre you are entitled to and the winter parking window all change at every municipal boundary. That is why each city has its own page rather than a line in a table: we write down the name of the by-law, the drop-off centre regime and what our drivers know about the local ground.

From Longueuil's apartment blocks to the riverside villages

A driver who knows the South Shore knows he never makes the same delivery twice. In Longueuil, apartments account for 58.9% of the housing stock and 47.7% of households are renters: a good share of our drops happens in a multi-unit parking lot rather than a double driveway, and sometimes on the public side of the line. In Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, average residential density — ten dwellings per hectare — is the lowest in the whole agglomeration: the private driveway is almost always enough. Brossard's urban plan puts the agglomeration's average density at 1,547 residents per km² in 2021; around here, the average describes nobody. In Brossard, where 34.3% of homes are apartments in buildings under five storeys, both cases turn up in the same truck day.

Further east, the river takes over again. More than 80% of Varennes sits in a permanent agricultural zone, more than 95% of Verchères — and their old village cores line up dense buildings on small lots, where driveways are short. That is exactly where the house rule of thumb earns its keep: a 10 yard has the same footprint as a 20 yard, it is simply lower — it does not free up any length. And our drivers' tip holds on both kinds of ground: even with the built-in PROTEC-O-SOL planks, a dumpster is still a steel box; slide four flattened cardboard boxes or a thin sheet of plywood where it will sit.

On the commercial side, Brossard's urban plan — quoting an analysis from September 2011 — describes a structure built around four supra-regional hubs: the Promenades Saint-Bruno area, boulevard Taschereau, the Carrefour de la Rive-Sud in Boucherville and Quartier DIX30 in Brossard. Those are also the areas where 40 yard rotations get planned ahead with the dispatcher.

The river, the bridges — and why our routes do not use them

The South Shore does not touch Montreal: the river separates them, and every crossing is a bottleneck. The federal Crown corporation The Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated operates and maintains the Jacques Cartier Bridge, the Honoré-Mercier Bridge (federal section) and the Estacade; the Louis-Hippolyte-La Fontaine bridge-tunnel, opened in 1967, links the South Shore to the island of Montreal with 2 km of tunnel to Île Charron and 457 m of bridge to Boucherville — its rehabilitation is announced through 2027. As for trucking, Brossard's urban plan, quoting a 2013 figure, writes that between 10,000 and 12,000 trucks cross the Champlain Bridge every day, close to 50% of all heavy traffic between the South Shore and Montreal.

Our job is to stay out of that number. Highway 30 runs about 140 km between Vaudreuil-Dorion and Sorel-Tracy and, since it was completed in 2012, serves as the bypass west of Montreal. It links Châteauguay, La Prairie, Candiac, Delson, Brossard, Saint-Bruno, Boucherville and Varennes without ever touching the island: a South Shore dumpster rotation has no reason to cross the river, it follows the A-30. The lead time itself is not a consequence of geography: it is the same everywhere we deliver — same day if dumpsters are available, ideally booked 24 to 48 hours ahead, Monday through Friday.

Four structures, one Mohawk territory — and your rules change with them

This carve-up is not geography trivia: it decides which drop-off centre you may use, who collects your waste, and what document you need to place a dumpster on the street.

Kahnawà:ke	Neither a Quebec municipality nor an MRC: a Mohawk territory administered by the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke, where an outside business operates under permit. We bring the same sizes there, and we confirm the conditions with the Council before setting a date.

The municipal drop-off centre is sized for a household, not a job site

Across our checks, we counted at least eleven drop-off centres run by eight different authorities on the South Shore. None of them is “the South Shore drop-off centre”: each serves a defined perimeter, free of charge for its own residents, on proof of residence — driver's licence and vehicle registration in the Longueuil agglomeration, photo ID at the MRC de La Vallée-du-Richelieu and in Saint-Constant. The neighbour two streets over has no automatic right to it.

And above all the volume is capped, and the cap is small: under 2.5 m³ per visit and 12 visits a year per address in the Longueuil agglomeration, 3 m³ per visit in Châteauguay and in Saint-Constant, where only one visit a week is allowed, 2.3 m³ per visit in Chambly, 12 m³ a year at the MRC de La Vallée-du-Richelieu. A 10 cubic yard dumpster holds 7.6 m³: that is three to four drop-off trips for the same volume, unloaded by hand — and, in the Longueuil agglomeration as at the MRC de La Vallée-du-Richelieu, with a vehicle no longer than 7.5 m including the trailer and no dump trailers allowed. For a trailer of branches, the drop-off centre does the job. For a kitchen, a basement or a roof, it does not.

For a contractor the answer is shorter still. Materials of commercial origin are refused in the Longueuil agglomeration, at the MRC de La Vallée-du-Richelieu and in Saint-Constant, each in their own words; where a contractor is admitted, it is in the client's name, on the client's permit, and in loads of 2.3 to 3 m³ — roughly a third of a 10 yard per trip. In every city we have checked, construction, renovation and demolition debris is also excluded from both the garbage and the bulky-item collections. The contractor dumpster, with its 15 days and its planned rotations, exists for exactly that gap.

What people ask us about the South Shore

Do I need a permit to place a dumpster on the South Shore?

There is no “South Shore” permit: the answer belongs to your city. In the twelve cities on this territory whose by-laws we have documented, none requires a municipal permit for a dumpster placed entirely on private property — three say so in writing, the others leave it to be concluded from the absence of any provision. As soon as the box touches the street, the sidewalk or the municipal right-of-way, eleven of those twelve require an authorization, under different names. Do your trucks have to cross a bridge to reach me?

For a South Shore address, no: our rotations follow Highway 30, which links Châteauguay, La Prairie, Candiac, Delson, Brossard, Saint-Bruno, Boucherville and Varennes without touching the island of Montreal. Can I use the municipal drop-off centre instead of renting a dumpster?

For a trailer of branches, yes. For a job site, the arithmetic settles it fast: a 10 cubic yard dumpster holds 7.6 m³, while the cap is under 2.5 m³ per visit in the Longueuil agglomeration, 3 m³ in Saint-Constant and Châteauguay, 2.3 m³ in Chambly. That is three to four trips, unloaded by hand, and only one visit a week in Saint-Constant. Add that materials of commercial origin are refused in several of those networks, and the dumpster becomes the short road again.

Is the price the same everywhere on the South Shore?

Can a dumpster stay on the street in winter?

It can, but it is the most fragile case. There is no regional winter window: across the twelve cities we have checked, there are eight distinct windows, with start dates spread from November 1 to December 1 and end dates from March 31 to April 30. Those by-laws target road vehicles, and a dumpster is not one — what threatens it is the occupancy authorization, revocable at any time in several cities. A private driveway, on the other hand, can be planned.

My municipality does not have a page yet — do you serve it?
