For the street, yes: the town's prior authorization is mandatory, and the traffic by-law names the container in so many words (by-law 1012-2015, s. 44; $150 fine). For private land, we answer carefully. The table of works requiring authorization in by-law U-200 provides no permit or certificate for a temporary container — but its section 18 states that the list is not closed, and zoning by-law U-100 restricts the location of waste containers to the rear yard in residential zones. The rear yard is therefore the only expressly permitted spot; for a front driveway, the question goes to the planning and environment department at 450 587-5901, extension 222, before delivery. Not without the town's authorization, and it is written plainly: “It is prohibited to place or allow to be placed on a sidewalk, a street, a public passage or a public place, notably soil, gravel, sand, snow, construction material, sod and a container without having first obtained an authorization from the Town” (by-law 1012-2015, s. 44). Contrecœur is one of the rare towns whose traffic by-law names the container. The fine is $150. Add the ban on leaving a bulky object in a street without a permit (s. 49) and the ban on parking between the curb and the property line (s. 53): the municipal grass strip is not available space. The exact authorization mechanism is confirmed at 450 587-5901, extension 222.

This is the Contrecœur question, and we would rather ask it properly than answer it too fast. The accessory equipment table in residential zoning reads “Waste container — front yard and fixed front setback: no; side yard: no; rear yard: yes” (U-100, s. 187), and section 280 draws up a closed list of permitted temporary equipment on which the rental container does not appear. Several clues suggest the chapter targets the permanent containers of buildings — mandatory from 10 dwellings up, required to sit “on a concrete surface”, and allowed in a commercial front yard only if “buried and integrated into landscaping”. But the by-law does not define “waste container”, and that reading belongs to the inspector, not the supplier. One call to 450 587-5901, extension 222, settles it before the truck leaves.

Between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday to Friday, and between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Those are not our opening hours, they are the by-law: section 52 of nuisance by-law 726-2003 prohibits noisy work — and it expressly names “the delivery of materials” — Monday to Thursday between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m., Friday between 8 p.m. and 10 a.m., Saturday between 6 p.m. and 10 a.m. and Sunday between 6 p.m. and 7 a.m. Dropping a dumpster at 6:30 a.m. on a Tuesday, or at 8 a.m. on a Saturday, falls inside the prohibited window. Noise is also capped at 50 decibels at the lot lines of a residential property. We plan the window with you when you book.

For a car trunk it is a good address — and one of the rare ones that accepts concrete, asphalt, brick and uncontaminated soil. For a job site, no, and the regional county's own figures say so. The North Sector, at 4111 route Marie-Victorin, opens Wednesday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in weeks 14 to 44, then Saturday only in weeks 1 to 13: four days a week in summer, one in winter. The residential rate climbs from $5 to $110 by volume, capped at 300 cu ft, at one trip a day per address, with $25, $50 or $100 extra for asphalt shingles or soil. You unload yourself — “staff are not authorized to unload vehicles” — having sorted beforehand, and you must be through the gate 15 minutes before closing. A 10 yard box holds 270 cu ft, a 20 yard 540 cu ft, a 40 yard 1,080 cu ft: past the first size, the grid stops existing.

No in both cases, and by-law 214 of the regional county says so in writing. The definition of “résidus ultimes” — what the garbage bin accepts — expressly excludes construction, renovation and demolition waste and “demolition and excavation debris such as rubble and plaster, pieces of concrete and masonry, chunks of paving, soil and dust”. The bulky waste collection excludes “construction materials” and treats “dismantled furniture” as construction waste; it requires advance registration on Tri-Facile and runs only in February, April through August, October and December — nothing in January, March, September or November. Since 2026 the garbage bin comes every three weeks and surplus left beside it is no longer accepted. Setting out excluded materials costs an individual $200 to $500.

Check your zone before planning a demolition. Since June 2, 2026, by-law U-101 has frozen eight industrial zones — I2-6, I2-14, I2-15, I2-28, I3-1, I3-4, I3-5 and I3-8 — where any change of use, “any new construction, whether principal or accessory”, “any total or partial demolition” and any cadastral operation are prohibited. The exceptions cover public safety, requirements of a higher authority, “routine maintenance work having no impact on the use, volume or siting of a building”, minor repairs and the preservation of acquired rights; council may also authorize a project by resolution. Routine maintenance goes ahead, a partial demolition is frozen. We deliver the 40 yard box either way — but it is worth knowing before you order it.
