On the residential side
Here, your sector's letter is also the first letter of your local street names: the urban plan spells it out, and the City files its collection calendar under seventeen sectors — A, B, C, E, I, J, L, M, N, O, P, R, S, T, V, X and Y. There is no D, no F, no K, no Q. It is the first marker our dispatch writes down, because it already announces the ground: sector A has more than three buildings in four put up before 1981 and the city's only grid street pattern, while sector E comes down to a single project, Solar Uniquartier, announced for roughly 6,000 households before 2030.
The 2021 census then corrects a common assumption. Of 35,885 occupied dwellings, 13,920 are single-family homes (38.8%), but 12,325 are apartments in a building of fewer than five storeys (34.3%): a good share of our drops happens in the parking area of a multi-unit building, not in a suburban double driveway. Add 12,670 dwellings built between 1961 and 1980 — more than a third of the housing stock — and the renovation seam is plain to see: those kitchens and basements all reach their second life at the same time. On a corner lot, one rule stops us: the visibility triangle in the zoning by-law, two 9 m segments from the intersection inside which nothing may rise above 0.75 m. No dumpster is that low; the drop moves back toward the far end of the driveway.
One last piece of advice, straight from our delivery crews: even with the built-in planks, a dumpster is still a steel box. Slide four flattened cardboard boxes, or a thin sheet of plywood, under the skids.

On the commercial side
Quartier DIX30 sits in sector L. The urban plan credits it with a little over 3.9 million square feet of gross leasable area and describes it as the second-largest shopping centre in Canada — with, on top of that, congestion zones on boulevards du Quartier and Leduc, Saturdays and Sundays especially. Our 40-yard rotations there get scheduled on weekdays, and early.
Sectors I and J make up the industrial park, around boulevard Matte between Taschereau and Highway 30: close to 180 hectares, of which only 10.4 hectares were still vacant in 2012 according to the plan, and home to construction contractors among others. A second hub sits in sector C — a little over 103 hectares, with the IKEA distribution centre put up in 1989. Two access constraints are worth a phone call before a time is set. First, trucking: under the urban plan, heavy vehicles may travel only on certain major arteries — Taschereau, du Quartier, Matte, Grande Allée — and on the local streets of the industrial park. Then the landlocking: boulevard Leduc is the only road link between sectors C and L, and boulevard de Rome the only way through between L and M. In sector L, finally, private streets with no name of their own make civic addresses hard to find; a visual landmark saves us a round trip.
