Size is not the whole story: dumpsters are rented by material type. Each type goes to a different disposal facility — that is why mixed loads bring extra fees. One choice to make, five options:

Why it matters. A dumpster rented for concrete that shows up at the disposal facility with wood in it is refused at the concrete rate: the sorting gets billed back. Do I need a permit to place a dumpster in Saint-Charles-sur-Richelieu?

Not for the dumpster itself, if it sits entirely in your driveway. We word it carefully because the conclusion comes from an absence of provision: section 29 of the permits and certificates by-law lists fourteen items subject to a certificate of authorization, and the temporary dumpster is not one of them; the zoning by-law only mentions containers as prohibited buildings or as permanent commercial enclosures. The Municipality writes it nowhere in so many words — if your case raises a doubt, the building and environment inspector answers at 450 584-3484 or urbanisme@saint-charles-sur-richelieu.ca, Monday to Thursday. The job site, however, often does need a permit: the exemption stops at 20,000 $ of work without changes to partitions or openings, and sooner still in sectors subject to the PIIA.

Can I have the dumpster placed on the street in front of my house?

Not without authorization, and we can promise you nothing there. Occupation of the public domain is prohibited without authorization (by-law 277-13-004, s. 2), and G4-2025 forbids obstructing the public road by depositing materials or objects « regardless of their nature » (s. 16 b). The only door expressly provided is section 37 of the construction by-law: during work covered by a permit, encroaching on the right-of-way is possible on six conditions, including at most one third of the road's width, signage maintained at all times and a height capped at 1.8 metres. Since the 2026 fee by-law provides neither a rate nor a form for temporary occupation, the actual procedure gets confirmed with the Municipality — we call together at 450 584-3484, Monday to Thursday.

Can the regional drop-off centre replace a dumpster?

For a car trunk, yes: the free quota is 12 m³ per year — about 15.7 cubic yards, calculated from the MRC's official figures —, then 2.50 $ per 0.1 m³. For a job site, the mechanics close in: the centre is in Mont-Saint-Hilaire, less than 15 kilometres away, closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays in summer and open only three days a week in winter; only passenger cars and pick-ups are admitted, with a non-tipping trailer and a rig under 7.5 m; and everything is unloaded by hand, engine off. Every trip is hauled yourself. On the other side: a 10 yard holds 7.6 m³, a 20 yard 15.3 m³, a 40 yard 30.6 m³ — delivered and picked up in your driveway.

Can my contractor use the MRC's drop-off centre?

No, and it is written in plain terms: « Industries, businesses and institutions not authorized »; contractors and materials from commercial activities are refused, and lettered trucks are not admitted on site — except with prior authorization issued by the MRC to a citizen hauling materials from their own home. The moment a contractor does the work, the drop-off centre's door closes: the debris goes through a dumpster. That is also the Municipality's own logic, which requires the demolition certificate application to state « the method chosen for the disposal of materials » — a one-line answer when a dumpster is booked.

Can't the garbage collection absorb my renovation debris?

No. Garbage passes once every three weeks — 17 collections on the MRC's 2026 calendar, all on Mondays — in a single wheeled bin per address, and the refusal list names the job site precisely: gypsum, ceramics, concrete, asphalt, asphalt shingles, mortar, brick, mineral wool, wood boards, mouldings, planks, doors, along with soil, sand, gravel and rock. Each item is capped at 25 kg and 1.2 metres, and the calendar states that whatever goes in the garbage « is sent to landfill, without being sorted ». The bulky-item collection — monthly, by reservation before the preceding Friday noon — also refuses construction, renovation and demolition materials.

What does a delivery look like in the village core or on a rang?

In the village, the urban plan itself speaks of « narrow streets » and « a very tight urban fabric »: the spot gets chosen ahead, factoring in the sight triangle on corner lots — 7.5 metres per side, nothing over 1 metre high. On the rangs, nearly every property has its own septic installation: the dumpster goes on the driveway, never over a leaching field. Two road particulars: Chemin des Patriotes (Route 133) and the Grand Rang answer to the ministère des Transports, and no bridge crosses the Richelieu in the municipality — a truck coming from the west bank passes through Beloeil or beyond. As for timing, G4-2025 prohibits any loading or unloading between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m.: we deliver in the daytime window.

Will the dumpster damage my driveway?

What our drivers check before the box comes down

We deliver across the whole territory, and it comes in two worlds: a village of 55.2 hectares — less than 1% of the municipality, the rest being farmland over 98% — and some fifty kilometres of roads and rangs. In the village core, which grew at the corner of Rue de l'Union and Chemin des Patriotes, the urban plan describes « a very tight urban fabric », « small lots », houses mostly dating from the early 20th century — and one photo caption sums it up: « narrow streets ». That is exactly the kind of place where the truck plans its move before it arrives. A 20 yard box, roughly the size of a Dodge Caravan, fits when the spot is chosen ahead; the 10 yard equals a 20 yard filled halfway — same footprint, simply lower. At the other end of the village, the east end — Rue Benoît, Rue Charron, Rue des Loisirs, Place Benoît and the eastern stretch of Rue de l'Union, opened in the 1980s and then around 1995 — offers cottages on larger lots: there, the box comes down without trapping the car.

The second thing our drivers know about Saint-Charles-sur-Richelieu is septic systems. The treatment basins built in 2007 serve only the urban perimeter and part of Chemin des Patriotes, north side: every other property — which means nearly everything along the rangs — has its own septic installation. That is reason number one to set the dumpster on the driveway, never on the lawn: a leaching field does not carry a loaded dumpster, and the spot is confirmed on the phone, before delivery. Along Chemin des Patriotes, riverside properties are also narrow, squeezed between the road and a bank of less than five metres shored up with stone walls — a spot there gets chosen, not improvised.

Two local rules round out the check. On a corner lot, the sight triangle — two sides of 7.5 metres along the street lines — must stay free of anything over 1 metre high (zoning, s. 53): at a village street corner, the usable space shrinks accordingly. And zoning prohibits, across the whole territory, using a container « as a building » (s. 28) — the rule targets the shipping container turned into a shed, not the box rented for the length of a job, which leaves with us. Contractors, farms and property managers in Saint-Charles-sur-Richelieu

Saint-Charles-sur-Richelieu has no industrial park — its urban plan says so, adding that the few industrial-type activities sit mainly on Rue Saint-Jean-Baptiste. The real economic engine is agriculture: more than three quarters of the farm businesses are field-crop farms, on class 1 and 2 soils covering two thirds of the territory. Local logistics has its quirks, and we know them. No bridge crosses the Richelieu in the municipality — the seasonal ferry at the end of Rue de l'Union is no substitute for a bridge for a truck, which arrives via Beloeil or beyond. Chemin des Patriotes (Route 133) and the Grand Rang are under the responsibility of the ministère des Transports: on those two axes, the right-of-way is not the Municipality's to grant. On Rue de l'Union, parking is prohibited at all times from number 10 to number 97, and the delivery zone laid out there is capped at one hour, reserved for trucks serving the local business. A truck may stop in the streets « to make a local delivery or provide a service » (by-law 277-24-009, s. 7.7) — that is us — but not wait there. And G4-2025 prohibits « loading or unloading » between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m.: our rotations run in the daytime window. One last detail that saves delays: the municipal office is closed on Fridays — a permit question for a Friday delivery gets settled by Thursday at the latest.

In winter the street clears at night — the driveway gets planned

From November 1 to April 1 inclusive, parking or stopping a vehicle on the public road is prohibited between midnight and 6 a.m., across the whole territory (by-law 277-24-009, s. 7.1, echoed by G4-2025) — a calendar ban, not one tied only to snow-clearing operations, which section 7.5 covers on top. No vehicle may ever sit more than 72 hours in the same spot, on pain of towing at the owner's expense. These rules target road vehicles, not dumpsters — so we will not tell you a dumpster is « banned in winter » in Saint-Charles. What they say about the village is simpler: five months a year, the street must stay clear at night and plowable across its full width, and traffic fines run from 100 $ to 1,000 $ « for each day or part of a day the offence lasts ». The dumpster's place is in the driveway.

And that driveway is shared. The fabric car shelter is allowed from October 15 to May 15 — seven months, a longer window than in many towns —, 2 metres from the travelled surface of the street, 1 metre from any property line, up to 30 m² and 4 metres high (zoning, s. 77). In a village-core driveway, it stands exactly where the dumpster would go. A Saint-Charles winter therefore gets planned at booking: together we pick the corner of the driveway that stays reachable once the shelter is up and the snow is blown — and the truck does the rest.

Why the drop-off centre is not enough in Saint-Charles-sur-Richelieu

Saint-Charles-sur-Richelieu has no drop-off centre on its territory. Its residents use the regional Écocentre of the MRC de La Vallée-du-Richelieu, at 60 rue Fisher in Mont-Saint-Hilaire — less than 15 kilometres from the village —, entered from Rue Fisher when arriving by Chemin Benoît. Access is reserved for residents of the ten participating municipalities, proof of residence and photo ID in hand, card payment only, and the free quota is 12 m³ per year, then 2.50 $ per 0.1 m³. For a car trunk, it is the right address. Here is where the door closes.

Each item is capped at 25 kg and 1.2 metres, and the calendar warns that whatever goes in the garbage « is sent to landfill, without being sorted ». The bulky-item collection, monthly and by reservation before the preceding Friday noon, takes no construction debris either. The service is financed by an annual 295 $ fee per dwelling. For a job site the arithmetic is quick: there is no municipal fallback — that is exactly what a dumpster settles.
