I own a rental building in Saint-Hyacinthe: can I use the ecocentre?

No: the RIAM deems non-occupant owners of rental buildings to be "carrying out commercial operations", and commercial waste is refused on site. First Canadian city admitted to the international club of technopoles (1993), Saint-Hyacinthe concentrates 63.2% of the population and 77.8% of the jobs of the MRC des Maskoutains; the Cité de la biotechnologie agroalimentaire, vétérinaire et agroenvironnementale, opened in 2003, sets aside a full three million square feet for the sector's companies, according to the urban plan. And the city is blunt: stores, industries and institutions must hand their garbage over "to a private company" — no municipal service picks it up. 40-yard dumpsters for job sites, single-material sizes for concrete, brick or asphalt, and pickups timed to your schedule.

Winter in Saint-Hyacinthe

From December to early April the Maskoutains ecocentre is closed: a winter job site has no municipal outlet for its debris — the dumpster, on the other hand, gets delivered year-round. Out on the streets, the city plows the older neighbourhoods itself (Saint-Joseph, La Providence, Bois-Joli, Sacré-Cœur, Saint-Sacrement and downtown) and leaves the outskirts to private contractors; during snow-loading operations, the roadway may be cleared over its full width. The smart move: settle on a spot in the private driveway when you book — we pick it with you over the phone.

Why the drop-off centre is not enough in Saint-Hyacinthe

The drop-off centre serving Saint-Hyacinthe belongs to the RIAM — the Régie intermunicipale d'Acton et des Maskoutains. Access is free for residents of the 25 member municipalities, proof of residency in hand. Its rules, though, are strict:
