Size is not the whole story: dumpsters are rented by material type. Each type goes to a different disposal facility — that is why mixed loads bring extra fees. One choice to make, five options:

Why it matters. A dumpster rented for concrete that shows up at the disposal facility with wood in it is refused at the concrete rate: the sorting gets billed back. Do I need a permit to place a dumpster in Saint-Marc-sur-Richelieu?

No — and for once it is not a conclusion drawn from a by-law's silence. The official table of permit and certificate by-law 8-2011 (s. 27) classes the « Conteneur à déchets » (waste dumpster) in the NONE column: no permit, no certificate. The fee schedule (s. 73) repeats the same entry: no fee. The job site, however, often needs a permit: starting work before it is issued is forbidden (s. 21), and only minor maintenance work under 5,000 $ — touching neither foundations, structure, floor area nor the number of dwellings, and outside any P.I.I.A. review — is exempt (s. 30). In doubt? Planning department, 450 584-2258, extension 102.

Is it true that a dumpster is mandatory on a job site in Saint-Marc?

Yes, and the municipality writes it twice rather than once. Construction by-law 5-2011 (s. 69): « for any construction or demolition project, the owner or the person carrying out the work must obtain a dumpster to collect the construction or demolition debris ». And by-law 8-2011 (s. 21, 4°) commits the permit applicant to « install a waste dumpster with a minimum capacity of 5.6 cubic metres », where required, extension projects included. It is one of the rare municipalities to write a minimum dumpster volume into its by-law: 5.6 m³ ≈ 7.3 cubic yards, so our 10 yard box (7.6 m³) is the first compliant size. Conversely, leaving debris lying on the lot lets the municipality have it cleaned « at the owner's cost and expense » (s. 68).

Can I have the dumpster placed on the street in front of my house?

During work, it is provided for — and the certificate costs nothing. The by-law 8-2011 table classes « use of a traffic lane during construction work » as a certificate of authorization, and the fee schedule sets that certificate at no charge. The conditions of zoning section 95 apply: at most one third of the width of the lane, signal lights lit from sunset to sunrise, everything removed within 3 days of the end of the work. Honest caveat: the section caps deposits at 1.80 metres in height — lower than a 20 yard dumpster — and what it covers exactly for a roll-off is checked with the planning department before any promise. Outside work, G4-2025 (s. 16) prohibits obstructing the public way with objects « of any nature whatsoever », and in winter overnight street parking is banned from November 1 to April 1. The driveway remains the best spot — that is where we deliver.

Can the drop-off centre replace a dumpster in Saint-Marc-sur-Richelieu?

For a car trunk, yes — but it is not in Saint-Marc. The MRC's regional drop-off centre is at 60 Rue Fisher in Mont-Saint-Hilaire, on the other side of the river. Construction materials, bulky items, granular materials and green waste are capped there at 12 m³ a year free of charge, then 2.50 $ per 0.1 m³; only passenger cars and pick-ups are admitted, with a non-tipping trailer, the whole rig under 7.5 m (25 feet); you unload everything yourself, engine off; and in winter it opens only Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Volume landmarks: a 10 yard box holds 7.6 m³, a 20 yard 15.3 m³, a 40 yard 30.6 m³ — the entire annual quota (12 m³) fits inside a single 20 yard box.

I am a contractor: can I use the regional drop-off centre?

No, and the MRC writes it twice. First: « industries, businesses and institutions not authorized ». Then: « contractors and materials from commercial activities are not accepted », and « lettered trucks are not allowed » on the site — except with prior authorization issued by the MRCVR to a citizen hauling materials from their own home, to be validated with Info-collectes (450 464-4636) before the visit. For a Saint-Marc job site, the dumpster is not a convenient shortcut: it is the only route left — and the one the municipal by-laws require anyway on any construction or demolition project.

How do I get rid of excavation soil in Saint-Marc-sur-Richelieu?

It is the most tightly closed case on the territory. The garbage bin refuses « dry materials (soil, sand, gravel, rock) » by name — and Saint-Marc's 2026 calendar allows only one wheeled bin per address anyway. The bulky waste collection, by reservation only, refuses the same materials. And soil is not on the regional drop-off centre's accepted-materials list: its page offers soil « to give away » instead. No municipal route found, in short — which is exactly why we deliver a dumpster reserved for soil, rock and sod, relevant here where the municipality supports a septic system upgrade program: every replaced septic bed means excavation soil to haul out.

Will the dumpster damage my driveway?

What our drivers check before the box comes down

We deliver from the village core to the rangs — from Rue Richelieu along the river to the Rang des Soixante, des Trente and des Quatorze — and the truck plans its move before it arrives. Three things get settled on the phone rather than in the driveway: access, slope and room. The truck comes in through the driveway entrance — traffic by-law 2-2024 forbids crossing a curb anywhere else — and a driveway entrance may not exceed a 10% slope (zoning 3-2011, s. 295, 4°). In the village, the « belles résidences ancestrales » the municipality itself describes have driveways drawn long before roll-off trucks existed: we pick the spot together, when you book. A 20 yard box, roughly the size of a Dodge Caravan, fits in most driveways without trapping the car; the 10 yard equals a 20 yard filled halfway — same footprint, simply lower.

The second thing our drivers know about Saint-Marc is its ground. The municipality describes it itself: very fertile soil resting on a bluish clay subsoil left behind by the ancient Champlain Sea. The third is the shape of the territory: a tight village along the river whose inner streets are posted at 30 km/h, and an immense farm territory of rangs at 70 km/h. On the rangs, the ditch is part of the public way — by-law G4-2025 says it plainly: its « voie publique » includes « les fossés publics » — and nothing gets set down there. The box goes in the yard, never on the shoulder or over the ditch. And if your work needs a permit, the dumpster is not optional here: the construction by-law requires one for any construction or demolition project (5-2011, s. 69), and the permit applicant undertakes to install a dumpster with a minimum capacity of 5.6 cubic metres, where required (8-2011, s. 21). 5.6 m³ is about 7.3 cubic yards: our 10 yard box (7.6 m³) is the first compliant size.

Contractors, farms and property managers in Saint-Marc-sur-Richelieu

Saint-Marc-sur-Richelieu, a village of about 2,300 residents and a member of the association of Québec's most beautiful villages, proudly claims — in its own words — its three « fleurons » and its 72 businesses, on a territory whose zoning splits an « urban sector » grid from an « agricultural zone » grid. Our rotations are built around that reality: 40 yard dumpsters for job sites that move, photo tracking of every delivery, SMS notifications on drop-off and pick-up, and flexible pick-up as your work progresses. Two local windows we factor in by default: noisy work — loading and unloading included — is prohibited from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. (G4-2025, s. 2.4), with no separate weekend regime, and idling is capped at 5 minutes, with a written exception for an engine « used to perform a task or an auxiliary function » — precisely the lifting arm of a roll-off truck (s. 5).

For a contractor, the math is simple: the regional drop-off centre is closed to « industries, businesses and institutions », « lettered trucks are not allowed » on the site, and even a resident is capped there at 12 m³ a year for construction materials. The dumpster route is in any case the one the municipality imposes: a dumpster required on any construction or demolition project, job site equipment removed within 7 days of the end of the work, and the lot cleaned « at the owner's expense » if debris is left behind (by-law 5-2011, s. 68 and 69). Another very real stream here: the septic system upgrades the municipality supports through successive programs — excavations that produce soil that neither the bin, nor the bulky waste collection, nor the drop-off centre will take; our soil-rock-sod dumpster exists for exactly that. The 50 $ Libération Express credit rewards fast job sites: it applies when the dumpster is freed up within 48 hours of delivery, during the March-to-October high season.

In winter the street closes at night — the driveway gets planned

From November 1 to April 1, parking or stopping a vehicle on a public road is prohibited between midnight and 6 a.m., « across the whole territory of the municipality » (by-law 4-2012, s. 6, echoed by G4-2025), and a peace officer may have a vehicle moved at the owner's expense during snow removal (s. 8). So the street is no fallback in winter — and outside authorized work, it never is: G4-2025 prohibits obstructing the public way « by depositing materials or objects of any nature whatsoever » (s. 16).

What winter does change is how crowded the driveway gets. A temporary car shelter is allowed from October 15 to April 15, one per lot, only on the parking area or its access lane, at most 2.5 m tall and 30 m² in area (zoning 3-2011, s. 246 and following): it stands exactly where the dumpster would go. Add the snow — which G4-2025 forbids depositing on public property or the public way when it comes from private property (s. 15.1) — and the ground itself: Saint-Marc clay, soaked at spring thaw, bears less weight than in summer, which makes the PROTEC-O-SOL planks all the more useful. Six months a year, the driveway must hold the snow, the bins, sometimes the car shelter, and the dumpster: that gets planned when you book, not at the foot of the truck.

Why the drop-off centre is not enough in Saint-Marc-sur-Richelieu

Saint-Marc-sur-Richelieu has no drop-off centre on its territory. The regional drop-off centre of the MRC de La Vallée-du-Richelieu is at 60 Rue Fisher in Mont-Saint-Hilaire — the entrance is via Chemin Benoît — on the other side of the river, serving ten municipalities including Saint-Marc. Access is reserved for residents, on proof of residence and photo ID, payment by credit or debit card only. For a car trunk, it is the right address. Here is where the door closes.

At the curb, the fallback is thinner still. Saint-Marc's own 2026 collection calendar is categorical: « one single wheeled bin allowed per address », 120, 240 or 360 litres — and the MRC's « Ordures » page adds that « extra garbage is not accepted beside the bin ». That bin refuses construction, renovation and demolition materials by name — gypsum, ceramic, concrete, asphalt, shingles, mortar, brick, mineral wool, boards, moulding, planks, presswood, doors — as well as « dry materials (soil, sand, gravel, rock) ». The monthly bulky waste collection runs by reservation only, requested no later than noon the preceding Friday, for objects « easily handled by two people » — and it refuses the same materials, a list the MRC publishes at the top of its page. Meanwhile, the municipality's own by-laws require a dumpster on every job site. The arithmetic is quick: that is exactly what we deliver.
