10, 20 and 40 Cubic Yard Dumpster Rental in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield

The city goes further than a permit: its zoning by-law names the job-site dumpster and allows it. Section 5.1.4 of by-law 150 reads: « Containers for waste from the construction or renovation of a building are permitted but for a maximum duration of 60 consecutive days within the same year. » No by-law consulted on August 21, 2026 requires a permit or certificate for the dumpster itself placed on private land — we word it that way because by-law 152 on permits and certificates could not be downloaded that day. Zoning sets the limit in plain terms: 60 consecutive days within the same year (by-law 150, s. 5.1.4). That is generous — a commercial tent or inflatable structure gets only 30 consecutive days, once a year (s. 5.1.7) — and it is also a deadline to watch on a long job site, which is then run in rotations rather than as one motionless box. No, and we would rather say so plainly than promise. No by-law we consulted authorizes placing a container on the roadway in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield: the parking by-law covers only « road vehicles » and trailers, not a container set on the ground, and the nuisance by-law prohibits depositing harmful materials on public property (s. 18), with the city able to have it cleaned at the offender's expense after 24 hours. Add, from December 1 to April 1, the ban on parking from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. across the whole territory, and section 90 of by-law 477, which prohibits placing a container in front of someone else's property without their authorization. Yes, and it is written down. Section 7.1 of the zoning by-law states that « unless specified elsewhere in this by-law, only the uses, structures, buildings and equipment listed below are permitted in the front yard » — a limitative list — and its paragraph s) puts « containers for construction waste, subject to the conditions of this by-law » on it. The front yard, as the by-law defines it, is the space between the street line and the building. Those « conditions of this by-law » point in particular to the 60-day limit of section 5.1.4; if your lot is unusual — corner lot, reduced setback, sight triangle — the planning department settles it in one call at 450 370-4300.

Start with the width of the lot, because zoning translates it straight into metres. A residential curb cut runs from 2.5 m to 8 m, with all curb cuts together capped at 40% of the lot width; but « where the frontage of a lot is less than 12.5 m, that percentage may be increased to 50%, without exceeding 5 m » (by-law 150, s. 9.1). In Valleyfield's working-class streets the driveway is therefore often capped at five metres: a 20 yard box fits, but the car no longer gets by. You cannot get in with a dump truck or dump trailer, so everything comes out by hand, on every visit. On the business side, a 3 to 6 m³ visit is billed 120 $ before any additional cubic metre. And the bin itself refuses CRD (by-law 477, s. 8 h), as does the bulky waste collection: section 33 sends the resident back to their « own means » and their own expense.

Two cubic yards is one twentieth of a 40 yard dumpster. On the residential side, the cap is 360 litres per occupancy unit (s. 16) and a bin may not weigh more than 75 kilograms (s. 18). Construction debris is excluded from the service in every case.

Yes, and it is precisely the season that calls for the most planning. From November 1 to May 1, the winter car shelter legally occupies « a parking space or the access lane » — the very spot where the dumpster goes (by-law 150, s. 5.1.1). From December 1 to April 1, the street is no fallback: parking is prohibited from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. across the whole territory, except on a suspension notice issued from 5 p.m. for the following night only, which the vehicle owner is responsible for checking.
