Size is not the whole story: dumpsters are rented by material type. Each type goes to a different disposal facility — that is why mixed loads bring extra fees. One choice to make, five options:

Why it matters. A dumpster rented for concrete that shows up at the disposal facility with wood in it is refused at the concrete rate: the sorting gets billed back. What paperwork does Mascouche require to place a dumpster on the street?

A certificate of authorization to occupy a traffic lane, and only during construction work (by-law 1090, s. 33). The application wants your contact information, the types of materials and equipment placed on the lane, the projected date for clearing it and proof of insurance releasing the city from all liability. Entirely inside your driveway, none of that: no by-law requires it. The Bureau des permis settles your case at 450 474-4133, extension 1000; the location itself gets decided with us at 514 708-2424.

How much does that occupancy certificate cost in Mascouche?

We will not announce it, and we will not invent a figure: it is up to the Bureau des permis to confirm it for you, at 450 474-4133, extension 1000. What fee by-law 1356 does set in black and white as of January 1, 2026 is the rest of the file — $75 for a residential renovation permit, with an announced delay of 6 to 8 weeks once the application is complete and deemed admissible. If the street is your only option, ask the question before you book.

Does a Mascouche job site have to show a materials recovery contract?

Yes, and it is the strictest requirement we have come across. Section 15 a) of by-law 1090 obliges the applicant for a building permit to hand the municipal officer a copy of a contract binding them to an accredited dry materials recovery company, and to have the dumpster or dumpsters on the site before work begins. The rule holds for a new construction, an extension, and any certificate of authorization for renovation or demolition.

Where does renovation debris go, since Mascouche has no ecocentre?

To the Complexe Enviro Connexions waste depot, 3779, chemin des Quarante-Arpents, in Terrebonne: the city writes it in its own FAQ. A resident is entitled to 5 free visits a year and 5 metric tonnes, each load capped at 1.22 m × 2.44 m × 1.22 m, with proof of residence that a tax bill does not replace. Mascouche's industrial, commercial and institutional establishments, for their part, have no access at all: by-law 1290 says so at section 38.

Is the snowblower a worry when the dumpster spends the winter at your place?

What matters most is placing it well. When a snowbank encroaches more than 1 m onto the roadway, the city throws the built-up snow onto the lots along the street — a dumpster left at the property line catches it. Operations start at 2.5 cm of snow on the ground and streets are cleared again between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. Nothing bans a dumpster in winter in Mascouche; just pull it back up the driveway, away from the edge of the roadway.

How much driveway room does Mascouche need to free up, and for how many days?

Use your parking spot as a measuring stick: a 20-yard is about the size of a Dodge Caravan, and you have to add the room the truck needs to lift and back up. The 10-yard will not gain you space — it is a 20-yard filled halfway: same footprint, less height. The rule of thumb holds from one end of the city to the other, from the one-storey single-family homes of the lower terrace to the driveways of Les Cours de l'Étang. On the calendar side, seven days are included; free up the dumpster within 48 hours of delivery and the $50 Libération Express credit applies. Offer valid during the high season (March to October).

What do you risk by piling debris beside a bin or a public dumpster?

The bill arrives fast. Leaving waste at the foot of one of the city's five public dumpsters carries a fine of up to $300 for a first offence, and up to $600 for a business using one for commercial purposes. On the black-bin side, collection comes every other week, the bin must stay under 100 kg and go out to the curb before 6 a.m. — but construction, renovation and demolition waste is excluded from it by section 31 d) of by-law 1290. Sorting your CRD debris and placing it in an appropriate dumpster is an obligation under section 4: dodging it costs an individual $100 to $250.

From the 18th century to Les Cours de l'Étang

Statistics Canada counted 51,183 residents in Mascouche in 2021, 9.6% more than in 2016 while Quebec as a whole grew by 4.1%, and 19,981 occupied private dwellings, up 11.6%, over 106.89 km². The city, for its part, announces 54,540 inhabitants on 106.64 km² and projects 58,805 for 2031, with an average age of 40 and an agricultural zone covering 73% of the territory. The breakdown by dwelling type goes back to the 2016 census: of 17,900 occupied private dwellings, 62.0% were single-detached houses, 25.2% apartments in buildings under five storeys, 5.6% semi-detached houses, 4.5% duplex units and 2.4% row houses — not one unit, on the other hand, in a tower of five storeys or more, and 79.5% owner-occupied.

The urban plan cuts that territory into two halves linked by the Grand Coteau green corridor, Bas-Mascouche and Haut-Mascouche, which the city logo itself pictures as two terraces. The lower terrace lines up the town's first homes, one-storey detached houses; the upper terrace rests on lots served by the water main only; the countryside sector spreads lots of 1,500 to 3,000 m²; and the agroforestry area, north of the rivière Mascouche, takes in Lac-Samson and the Domaine Guilbeault. In the village core, where chemin Sainte-Marie meets montée Masson, the oldest houses date from the 18th century. The new Mascouche sector comes down to two projects: Les Cours de l'Étang and La Seigneurie du Chêne. From one end of that list to the other, the question asked over the phone never changes — how much width is left between the house and the street?

An L-shaped industrial park, cut in two by the railway

Mascouche's business hub sits where highways 640 and 25 meet, and the urban plan describes its flaws without softening them — 2003 figures, to be read as such: roughly 200 hectares shaped like an « L » about 500 metres deep, a site split in two by the railway with no road joining the halves, and a southern portion reachable only by rue Louis-Hébert. At the crossing of the two highways, the MégaCentre Mascouche spreads 125,000 m². Around it, the official road hierarchy comes down to a handful of names: highways 25 and 640, chemin Gascon as regional road 337, montée Masson as an arterial, then the collectors — chemin des Anglais, boulevard Mascouche, chemin Sainte-Marie, chemin Pincourt, chemin Saint-Henri, avenue de l'Esplanade.

For all of those addresses, the municipal shortcut does not exist. By-law 1290 closes the waste depot to Mascouche's industrial, commercial and institutional establishments and turns away materials coming from commercial or industrial work; the household hazardous waste collection, held twice a year at the municipal garage at 3370, chemin Sainte-Marie, likewise rules out waste of commercial origin; and a business caught using a public dumpster faces a fine of up to $600. 40-yard dumpsters, scheduled swaps, dumpsters dedicated to concrete, to bricks and mortar, to asphalt or to soil-rocks-sod: that gap is exactly what we fill.

When the snowblower aims at the lots

From November 15 to April 15, the night belongs to snow removal: between midnight and 7 a.m., no road vehicle parks along the street in Mascouche unless the director of public works has published a temporary authorization. Parking then switches from one side to the other as the calendar turns: even numbers on even days, odd numbers on odd days. The notice goes up on the city's website by 5 p.m. the day before; checking it before parking is on the citizen. None of these sections says a word about dumpsters — they govern road vehicles — but they do say what is at stake: for five months, the city wants to be able to clear the full width of the roadway.

The real constraint lies elsewhere. As soon as a snowbank encroaches more than 1 m onto the roadway, the city sends a snowblower to throw the built-up snow onto the lots along the street: a dumpster parked at the property line catches it. Operations start at 2.5 cm of snow on the ground and streets are cleared again between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. Add the seasonal car shelter, allowed from October 15 to April 15, no taller than 3 m, set 1 m behind the curb or the sidewalk — 2 m from the pavement where there is no curb — and not much is left of a short driveway. Six months a year, the shelter takes the very spot the dumpster would aim for: call us and we choose the location together.

Why the drop-off centre is not enough in Mascouche

The city's official FAQ answers in a single sentence: “There is no ecocentre in Mascouche”. The drop-off point the city designates is the Complexe Enviro Connexions waste depot, chemin des Quarante-Arpents (number 3779) — that is, a Terrebonne address. For two closet doors and an old countertop, the round trip makes sense. Here is where the count tips the other way.

In front of the house there is no way out either: the black bin turns away anything that comes off a job site — demolition, renovation, construction —, the 3rd-Wednesday bulky round sets it aside as well — doors, windows and loose materials included — and the city's five public dumpsters want it no more than the rest. The by-law itself names our solution: its section 4 requires every occupant to sort CRD debris and to place it in an appropriate dumpster (« dans un conteneur approprié »).
