Size is not the whole story: dumpsters are rented by material type. Each type goes to a different disposal facility — that is why mixed loads bring extra fees. One choice to make, five options:

Why it matters. A dumpster rented for concrete that shows up at the disposal facility with wood in it is refused at the concrete rate: the sorting gets billed back. Does Repentigny's zoning really allow a dumpster with no permit?

Yes, and it spells it out. Section 210 of zoning by-law 438 allows the construction waste dumpster on private land « pour la durée des travaux » — for the duration of the work. There is no permit to apply for and no maximum length to keep an eye on. The only limit is geographic: never in a street, a street right-of-way or a visibility triangle.

Will Repentigny tolerate a dumpster on its public property?

By-law 625 lets 48 hours go by without a certificate, on condition that the work is entered in the city's public occupancy register and that five other obligations are met. Beyond that, a temporary occupancy certificate is required: $155 per act, $0.50 per square metre per day, $2M or $5M in insurance and up to 60 days of processing time. That said, section 210 of the zoning by-law bars the construction dumpster from the street: we deliver in the driveway.

With two free ecocentres, why rent a dumpster in Repentigny?

Because the quotas are tight and separate. The rue Charles-Marchand ecocentre caps you at 1 m³ per visit and 12 m³ per year; the MRC ecoparc at 3 m³ per visit and 12 m³ per year. Those are two distinct ceilings, set by two different authorities, and they do not add up into one. The city's 12 m³ come to roughly 15.7 cubic yards — barely more than a single 20-yard dumpster, for a whole year.

Does my Repentigny job site have to have a dumpster?

If it is the construction or the demolition of a building, yes: section 131 of construction by-law 439 requires that all waste and unusable materials be placed without delay into a dumpster provided for that purpose, on the site. A renovation that is neither one nor the other — clearing out a garage, redoing a roof — is not covered by that section, even though demolition materials left on the ground remain a nuisance.

On a Saturday morning, from what hour can the work start?

Repentigny shifts its weekend schedule, which many cities do not. Renovation, construction or landscaping work on a dwelling escapes the noise nuisance from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on working days. On weekends and statutory holidays, that same tolerance begins only at 9 a.m., to end at 9 p.m. Two hours less in the morning, worth planning for in a busy weekend.

Which size empties a 1970s bungalow?

That is the most common case here, since 58% of Repentigny's housing stock went up during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. For a full basement or a kitchen, the 20-yard covers most situations — count on about the size of a Dodge Caravan in the driveway. For a smaller project, or when the car shelter already holds the spot, the 10-yard fits in the same square on the ground, with less height. Can you keep the dumpster longer than seven days?

The rental includes seven days, from the 10 to the 40-yard, and extends by simple arrangement — Repentigny's zoning sets no maximum length on private land anyway. Six dwellings out of ten are single-detached houses

The 2011 counts carried into urban plan 437 record 19,865 single-detached, non-attached houses in Repentigny, or 61.1% of the housing stock, against 24.9% of apartments sitting in buildings under five storeys. The age of the buildings tells the rest: only 6.2% of dwellings date from 1960 or earlier, and 58% went up during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. That is the generation of bungalows and cottages now reaching the age of the redone basement and the replaced roof.

Geography follows suit: the oldest streets lie west of boulevard Brien and in the Petit Village — the former village core of the north bank, where the Saint-Paul-l'Ermite church dates from 1858 — while the newer developments line the eastern and northern edges of the city. Repentigny and Le Gardeur are joined only by the boulevard Brien / rue Saint-Paul axis, the single direct link between the two sectors and a heavy one near the pont Rivest: one more reason to book 24 to 48 hours ahead rather than count on an improvised run.

The size benchmark, for a driveway of that kind: a 20-yard takes up about the size of a Dodge Caravan. The 10-yard is that same 20-yard filled halfway — no shorter on the ground, only lower.

Two industrial parks and the MRC's leading retail hub

Repentigny is the main industrial pole of the MRC de L'Assomption: more than 250 industrial businesses and over 3,600 jobs, spread across two parks. The one in the Le Gardeur sector covers close to 400 hectares — about a hundred businesses, more than 2,100 workers, General Dynamics alone taking up 80% of it — and the urban plan describes it as having reached saturation. The one in the Repentigny sector, alongside Highway 40 between rue Louvain and boulevard Industriel, is drifting gradually toward a commercial role.

Retail, precisely, carries real weight here: the big-box hub on boulevard Brien totals close to one million square feet between Highway 40 and boulevard Iberville, the Galeries Rive-Nord line up more than 140 stores there, and the city holds 71% of the retail and service commercial floor area of the MRC. Then comes the project of the decade, Avantia: 6 million square feet to be transformed between boulevards Brien and Industriel, the equivalent of 105 football fields, in a sector the city describes as one of Greater Montreal's largest heat islands.

For job sites of that scale, sorting is not even a question: neither the city's ecocentre nor the MRC's ecoparc takes commercial users. 40-yard dumpsters, swaps planned in advance, and the single-material dumpsters, one per material — concrete, asphalt, bricks and mortar, soil-rocks-sod — as soon as the site sorts at source.

November to March, in Repentigny

From November 15 to March 31, no vehicle may stay parked on the city's streets between midnight and 7 a.m., and the ban overrides any sign authorizing parking; it lifts only on December 24, 25, 26 and 31 and on January 1 and 2. The city does sometimes lift it when the weather allows, but the call comes by 6 p.m. at the latest for the night that follows, through the Hop alerts, the repentigny.ca home page and the 450 470-3850 line. Add 98 streets classified as too narrow or problematic, where the ban applies even with no maintenance operation under way, and six roads carrying no signage at all — Charbonneau, montée Lebeau, chemin Mazuret, chemin de la Presqu'Île, chemin de la Savane and chemin Quintal — off limits on both sides, around the clock, for the whole season.

These rules aim at road vehicles, not at dumpsters: no Repentigny by-law bans a dumpster in winter. What they do say is that the street is not a dependable spot from mid-November to the end of March. That leaves the driveway — except that the temporary car shelter is allowed there from the Friday before Thanksgiving until April 15, and it sits on precisely the space in question. Hence the appeal of the 10-yard during those months: the same ground area as the 20, less height to clear.

Why the drop-off centre is not enough in Repentigny

For three bags of old drywall and two cabinet doors, that is exactly what you need. The table below shows the point where the arithmetic stops working.

At the curb, the opening is narrower still. Garbage collection accepts neither soil, nor sod, nor the smallest scrap of construction, renovation or demolition debris; it stops at one wheeled bin per dwelling unit, with nothing extra set down beside it. As for bulky-item collection, which comes six times a year, it precisely does not count CRD debris among bulky items.
