Choose the right type of dumpster

Size is not the whole story: dumpsters are rented by material type. Each type goes to a different disposal facility — that is why mixed loads bring extra fees. One choice to make, five options:

Dry materials (mixed)

Why it matters. A dumpster rented for concrete that shows up at the disposal facility with wood in it is refused at the concrete rate: the sorting gets billed back. Is a permit needed for a dumpster in Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles?

On your own land, no: the municipal page states it in black and white, for residential and commercial lots alike. The borough asks only that you keep 0.6 m from the lot lines, aim for a side or rear yard, and install nothing in front of a façade. The occupancy permit becomes mandatory at the first centimetre of street, sidewalk or alley. And if the building falls under an “Industrie” or “Industrie lourde” use, exceptions apply: the permit counter, at 514 868-4343, decides.

What does a dumpster set on a street or in an alley of RDP–PAT cost?

$51 to issue and $26 to review, then $76 per day of occupied surface up to 99 m². The borough's peculiarity sits in that single figure: it holds for the street and the sidewalk exactly as it does for the alley and the strip behind the sidewalk. Is there an ecocentre inside the borough?

Yes: the Rivière-des-Prairies ecocentre, at 11400, rue Léopold-Christin. Mondays it stays shut. From April 15 to October 14 it receives Tuesday through Sunday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; over the remaining months, Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. A resident has 12 m³ free a year and 15 visits at the most for construction debris — a ceiling the city lifts at LaSalle and Saint-Laurent only. The unloading, for its part, is done by hand.

Can the bulky-item collection stand in for a dumpster?

Rarely. It addresses private individuals alone, and the borough caps it at 3 m³ per address — 105 cu ft in its own text, roughly 3.9 cubic yards, which does not even half-fill a 10-yard. Every receptacle has to weigh 25 kg at the most, and the list stops at cardboard boxes and 150-litre lidded bins. A demolished bathroom passes that volume on its own, and construction debris is refused at the household garbage collection in any case.

My address is in Montréal-Est: is the procedure the same?

No. Montréal-Est is an independent linked city, wedged between the Rivière-des-Prairies sector and the Pointe-aux-Trembles one; its by-laws and its rates belong to it alone, and the borough permit carries no weight there. Can the dumpster stay out on the street through the winter?

That is the time of year when it is worst placed. Residential and industrial sectors are cleared at the lowest priority, the orange no-parking signs can go up the same day before 3 p.m., and immobilised equipment gets in the operation's way. Between December and March, the driveway or the yard spares you the bad surprises — and remember that any snow you move has to stay on your own property.

Which size for a bungalow renovation, and how do you get the $50?

For the roof, the basement or the bathroom of a 1980s bungalow, the 20-yard is almost always enough: it parks in about the size of a Dodge Caravan. As for the 10-yard, it is that same 20-yard filled only to the halfway line: the square of ground it covers does not shrink, just its height, so a short driveway is no roomier for the swap. Seven days of rental are included, and a dumpster that leaves within 48 hours of its delivery triggers the $50 Libération Express credit, an offer valid during the high season (March to October).

A stock of houses, and that is rare on this island

The 2016 census profile counts 42,460 occupied private dwellings in the borough: 25.7% single detached houses, 14.0% semi-detached and 10.0% row houses, close to one dwelling in two. That same year 64% of households owned their home, while the city of Montreal counted 63.6% tenant households at the 2021 census: RDP–PAT runs the Montreal trend backwards. The buildings are younger here too — 12.6% of dwellings predate 1961, and 31.2% went up between 1981 and 1990 — the generation now redoing its roof, its basement and its bathroom. With 5.6 rooms on average and more than half the dwellings holding three bedrooms or more, the ordinary job around here is a renovation of some size. What that changes at delivery time: a great many of our clients put the box in their own driveway, with no municipal paperwork whatsoever; when the driveway is too narrow, the permit section further down takes over.

Pointe-de-l'Île, the industrial job site

The borough shares with Anjou and with the city of Montréal-Est the secteur industriel de la Pointe-de-l'Île (SIPI), which the city presents as one of the last large tracts still devoted to industry on the island of Montreal: more than 1,500 businesses, 35,000 jobs and over 40 million square feet of land left to develop, within reach of highways 20, 25 and 40 and of the port and rail infrastructure alike. Quebec and the city fund the soil rehabilitation there through a $100M program covering 90% of the cost. Work on that scale calls for the 40-yard and for the single-material dumpsters — concrete, bricks and mortar, asphalt, soil-rocks-sod — one material to a box, nothing mixed. One check is worth making before you order: the borough's municipal text holds exceptions in reserve for buildings occupied by an “Industrie” or “Industrie lourde” use group, and it is the permit counter that rules on those. On the reputation side, no Google listing carries the borough's name: the reviews that speak for us here are read on our Montreal listing, which shows 5.0 across 59 reviews.

Ninety-one machines, and your street served last

The borough rolls out its 91 pieces of snow-clearing equipment from 2.5 cm of snow on the pavement, and it publishes the order they follow: arterial streets and STM bus routes first, collector streets next — “such as 16e or 32e Avenue” — then, third and last, the residential and industrial sectors. The street in front of a bungalow, or in front of a plant, comes after all the rest. Parking bans running 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. are posted before 3 p.m. that same day, those running 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. the evening before, by 8 p.m., and “only Lexan signs (orange, on a post) are used”: RDP–PAT is not among the boroughs with permanent signage, so the notice reaches you late. Another rule that catches people out: pushing, moving or hauling snow onto public property is prohibited, the snow has to be piled on your own lot — the city specifies that only snow-removal contractors holding a borough permit can obtain access tickets for the snow dumps. All of it flows from the nuisance by-law (RCA22-30105) and the snow-removal by-law (RCA10-30037). From the first freeze to the thaw, private land stays the quiet spot.

Why the drop-off centre is not enough in Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles

Out in front of the house, municipal collection does not take over either. It is meant for private individuals: shops, schools, churches, embassies, companies and other organizations are sent to the private sector. It stops at 3 m³, which the borough writes as 105 cu ft, per address: roughly 3.9 cubic yards, not enough to half-fill a 10-yard. Every receptacle weighs 25 kg at the most, boards are tied into one-metre bundles, and the only receptacles accepted are cardboard boxes and 150-litre lidded bins. It is one of the lowest ceilings on the island, where the majority of boroughs allow 5 m³. As for construction debris — wood, gypsum, brick, concrete, asphalt shingles, ceramic — it never leaves with the household garbage: the ecocentre, or a private contractor.
