10, 20 and 40 Cubic Yard Dumpster Rental in Oka

Not for the dumpster itself, set down on your own land. We word it carefully because the conclusion comes from an absence of provision: the word « conteneur » appears neither in by-law 2013-111 on permits and certificates, nor in fee by-law 2013-112, nor in the traffic, nuisance or sanitation by-laws, and the closed list of 23 works subject to a permit covers no such case. The job site, on the other hand, often does need one: 50 $ for the renovation, alteration or transformation of a main building, 25 $ for a demolition or a curb cut, 20 $ for fill or excavation, free for tree felling. Yes, and two by-laws in force say so. By-law 2017-177 on residual materials lists among the duties of the owner, occupant, tenant or usufructuary that of « renting a container to dispose of construction, renovation or demolition residue where the quantity of residue exceeds 2.25 cubic metres » (s. 3.4 6°). Construction by-law 2025-291 requires you to « obtain a job site container […] where the quantity of material generated exceeds five (5) cubic yards » (s. 2.7.7). The two thresholds differ — 2.25 m³ is about 2.9 cubic yards — and neither text repeals the other: we publish both rather than pick one. And failing to comply has a price: 250 $ to 500 $ for an individual, 500 $ to 1,000 $ for a corporation, doubled on a repeat offence within two years, each day counting as a separate offence.

Twelve weeks at most, and it is written down: « where such a container or an accumulation of construction debris or waste is present on the lot, it is authorized for a maximum duration of twelve (12) consecutive weeks » (by-law 2025-291, s. 2.7.7). Few municipalities in Greater Montréal set a duration this plainly. Two further deadlines follow the end of the work: all materials, debris, waste and equipment must be removed within seven (7) days, and the lot cleaned up within two (2) weeks (s. 2.7.8). In practice most residential job sites free the box well before that — and the 50 $ Libération Express credit rewards precisely the first 48 hours, from March to October.

Not without an authorization from the municipality, and it is requested beforehand. « No one may place an object or property, or otherwise hinder or obstruct traffic, without having obtained an authorization from the municipality » (by-law 2023-267, s. 2.10), and « an authorization is required for the temporary occupancy of public property in order to place equipment on it, to deposit construction materials on it or to dig a cavity in it » (by-law 2025-291, s. 2.7.4). We found neither a published fee nor a published form for this request: it goes through the municipality, at 450 479-8333. Add the ban on parking more than 48 consecutive hours, the ban on parking within three metres of a fire hydrant or a dry hydrant, and the night ban from November 15 to April 15, between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m., except on Rue Saint-François-Xavier. The fine is 100 $ plus costs, and the vehicle may be moved and stored at its owner's expense.

That is the question we settle with the planning department rather than in a web page, and here is why. Three Oka texts cross without answering one another: zoning 2016-149 refuses a « conteneur à déchets » in the front margin and front yard (s. 6.2.1); by-law 2017-177 requires the rear or side margin and yard, except on a corner or through lot (s. 6.4); construction by-law 2025-291 allows the « conteneur de chantier » for twelve weeks without saying where (s. 2.7.7). The first two are aimed, in their context, at a building's permanent container — the one that sits on a cast-in-place concrete slab behind an opaque screen. On top of that comes a rule specific to the main road: « no outdoor storage is allowed in the front margin or the front yard of a property adjoining Route 344 » (s. 5.5.2). So we call the municipality with you, at 450 479-8333, and the spot is agreed before the truck leaves.

For a car trunk, yes, and it has one rare advantage: it is open on statutory holidays, at 2017 chemin d'Oka. For a job site, no, and the arithmetic is the municipality's own. « The volume of residual materials admissible per visit must not exceed 2.25 cubic metres » — about 2.9 cubic yards. A 10 yard dumpster holds 7.6 m³: that is 3.4 full visits, unloaded by hand, since « unloading the residual materials is the beneficiary's responsibility ». A 20 yard holds 15.3 m³, a 40 yard 30.6 m³. Add that access is reserved to Oka residents on proof of identity and residence, that the schedule drops to two days a week from November to April, and that the municipal leaflet concludes it itself: past five cubic yards, « renting a dry materials container from specialized companies ».

No contractor access is provided for in the published documents, and we prefer to put it that way rather than decide in the municipality's place. The drop-off centre page and by-law 2017-177 reserve the service to the « residential sector » and « exclusively […] to Oka residents (proof of identity and of residence required) ». Unlike other towns in the region, no merchant rate is published. Before counting on access, call the drop-off centre at 450 479-8336. Worth remembering for a property manager: any occupancy unit needing more than four wheeled bins must in any case be served by a private collection service and by container, at its own expense, and must notify the municipality before installation (s. 5.2.7).

Between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m., seven days a week — and that is the by-law's window, not a preference. By-law 2023-268 prohibits noise caused « by carrying out construction, demolition or repair work on a building or a vehicle, or by using any tool liable to cause noise, between 21 hours and 7 hours » (s. 5.2), and it sets no separate weekend schedule: the 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday rule of a neighbouring town must not be imported here. For commercial and industrial uses, loading and unloading goods is prohibited between 22 hours and 7 hours (s. 5.7). The by-law does provide a noise exception « on the occasion of residual materials collection », but it does not say that this covers the delivery of a private dumpster: we do not claim it, and we plan within the permitted window.

No, and it is a common situation here: Oka's zoning requires only that the access lane and the parking area be « paved or surfaced so as to eliminate any raising of dust and so that no mud can form on it ». Asphalt, concrete or interlocking pavers become mandatory only for an area of four spaces or more inside the urbanization perimeter (s. 6.7.5).
