Size is not the whole story: dumpsters are rented by material type. Each type goes to a different disposal facility — that is why mixed loads bring extra fees. One choice to make, five options:

Why it matters. A dumpster rented for concrete that shows up at the disposal facility with wood in it is refused at the concrete rate: the sorting gets billed back. Do you need a permit to set a dumpster down in Le Sud-Ouest?

Not if the box stays entirely on private ground: the borough spells it out in two sentences, no permit is necessary to install one temporarily for renovation or construction work. Yes as soon as it touches the public domain, where dumpsters are named outright in the list of cases covered. Call us before you file anything: the yard, the building's parking area or a truck standing by while you load settle a good many situations.

Does the lane come cheaper than the street in Le Sud-Ouest?

No, and that is a quirk of this borough: up to 99 m² of lane, back of sidewalk or unpaved ground, the rate is $74 a day — exactly the price of the street or the sidewalk up to 49 m². The permit is compulsory either way, since the lane belongs to the public domain just as much as the roadway. What is left is the one real criterion: the clearance the truck needs, and the safety of the drop.

How far ahead do you have to plan for a dumpster in the street?

Le Sud-Ouest asks for “a minimum of 10 business days for the review” of the application. In calendar days that comes to two weeks. It sits at the top of the Montreal range, and it changes the planning entirely: we can deliver the same day when a dumpster is free, but no delivery can outrun a permit. If the street or the lane is your only spot, we apply for the permit first and fix the date after.

My job site touches the canal de Lachine: is the borough permit enough?

No. The canal de Lachine is a national historic site administered by Parcs Canada, so federal property, and the agency requires “a permit, a lease or the conclusion of a release-of-liability agreement” for any project that touches the canal lands in any way whatsoever. Count on 6 to 8 weeks of processing and $118 in file-review fees, on top of the municipal permit. A private yard on rue Saint-Ambroise is not caught by this; in doubt, we check before booking.

Can a dumpster arrive on a Sunday in Le Sud-Ouest?

No. The borough by-law opens a window for renovation and construction work, material deliveries included, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, specifying that “this work is prohibited on Sundays and statutory holidays”. Le Sud-Ouest is one of only three Montreal boroughs to shut Sunday down that way. Our deliveries run Monday to Friday in any case, ideally booked 24 to 48 hours ahead.

Can the truck get down the small streets of Ville-Émard or Pointe-Saint-Charles?

Yes, because delivering a dumpster is a local delivery. The municipal heavy-vehicle dataset files 1,042 street segments of Le Sud-Ouest under “trucks prohibited except local delivery” — roughly half the network, and the usual class for Montreal residential streets. What is forbidden is crossing the neighbourhood: the truck comes in by an artery such as Notre-Dame Ouest, Saint-Patrick, Wellington or De La Vérendrye, and leaves the transit network only for the street of your address. Hence the value of an exact address.

Which size for a Saint-Henri plex or a Griffintown condo?

The 20-yard covers the majority of renovations: kitchen, bathroom, plaster demolition. It takes up about the size of a Dodge Caravan. The 10-yard is a 20-yard filled halfway: same footprint, lower sides, handy for loading over the rim but with no room gained in a short driveway — a detail that counts here, where 63.5% of dwellings have one to four rooms. Seven days are included for a homeowner, fifteen for a contractor, and the $50 Libération Express credit applies if you free up the dumpster within 48 hours of delivery, during the high season from March to October.

Where the delivery question is never the driveway

At the 2016 census, the borough of Le Sud-Ouest held 40,910 occupied private dwellings — and only 485 of them, 1.2%, were single detached houses, against 7.1% for Montreal as a whole at the 2021 census. Close to 80% of the stock is attached: 54.4% apartments in buildings of fewer than five storeys, 17% dwellings in a duplex. Two households in three rent, the average dwelling runs to 4.2 rooms, and 63.5% count between one and four of them. So the question that arises at delivery time is almost never “how much room is left in the driveway?” but “the yard, the lane, the building's parking, or the street with a permit?”. The stock is as two-sided as a street can be: 43.5% of dwellings date from 1960 or earlier, and the official profile records “a reserve of 7,210 dwellings (18%) [that] date from the past ten years, that is from 2006 to 2016”. A worker's plex coming down and a new condo being finished meet at the same corner — and they do not call for the same size of box.

Griffintown: 84 hectares of job sites on a grid laid out in 1806

The special planning programme for the Griffintown sector, published by the city in June 2021, describes a sector of close to 84 hectares (836,000 m²), “entirely located in the borough of Le Sud-Ouest” and hard against the edge of the business core. The Bassins du Nouveau Havre project alone, bounded by rue Ottawa, the canal de Lachine and rues du Séminaire and Richmond, provides for some 2,000 dwellings. The same document recalls that the subdivision of 1804-1806 laid down “a grid of relatively narrow orthogonal streets”, and that in 2021 certain sectors still showed “very narrow streets”. It further announces a cut in the number of on-street parking spaces, and the rule that “all parking areas be located inside a building”. For a finishing job in a tower, the spot for the box is therefore negotiated well in advance: garage floor, fenced site compound, or occupancy permit. Elsewhere in the borough — the workshops of rue Saint-Ambroise, the shops of Notre-Dame Ouest, the converted buildings along rue Saint-Patrick — the 40-yard and the single-material boxes (concrete, bricks and mortar, asphalt, soil-rocks-sod) take over as soon as demolition separates the materials. A useful point: the borough holds no Google listing of its own; it is our Montreal listing that covers the sector, rated 5.0 out of 5 across 61 reviews.

From November to April, the spot outside your door is never a given

The borough puts a figure on its own performance: “For 20 cm of snow or less, our goal is to complete operations in 4 days. If there is 30 cm, we then aim for 5 days.” Ploughing starts at 2.5 cm, loading from 15 cm up. The narrow streets of Le Sud-Ouest are filed as priority 1, on the same footing as the arteries and the approaches to schools; while they are being loaded, “parking is temporarily prohibited on both sides of the street”. The orange signs appear only “a few hours before” operations begin, and the borough states that each tow sets the convoy back 10 to 15 minutes. Three fallback parking lots are named for those days: place Saint-Henri (361, Pl. St-Henri, between Saint-Jacques and Notre-Dame Ouest), the complexe récréatif Gadbois and the parc Angrignon lot, reached from boulevard De La Vérendrye. One last detail that catches owners out: putting the snow from your own driveway onto public property is forbidden, and the authorization costs $204 for the first parking space of a building of four dwellings or fewer, from November 1 to April 1. The conclusion writes itself: between December and March, the dumpster goes on private ground every time that is possible, and the rental window is planned tight.

Why the drop-off centre is not enough in Le Sud-Ouest

There is no ecocentre anywhere in the borough of Le Sud-Ouest. The seven of the Montreal network are Acadie, Côte-des-Neiges, La Petite-Patrie, LaSalle, Rivière-des-Prairies, Saint-Laurent and Saint-Michel. And it is a good ecocentre, which has to be said even when saying it does nothing for the sale. Here are the five figures that decide the rest.

The arithmetic is quick: 12 m³ are worth about 15.7 cubic yards, so a 10-yard box stays under the free yearly quota while a 20-yard all but empties it on its own. On the sidewalk, the Le Sud-Ouest limit for bulky items and construction residue is 5 m³ per address — two thirds of a 10-yard — in receptacles of 25 kg, with boards tied into bundles 1 m long, and every plastic bag is refused as a receptacle, including the ones hardware stores sell as “construction bags”. The service is kept for households besides: companies, stores, schools, places of worship, embassies and organizations are all sent to the private sector, at their own cost.
