Choose the right type of dumpster

Size is not the whole story: dumpsters are rented by material type. Each type goes to a different disposal facility — that is why mixed loads bring extra fees. One choice to make, five options:

Why it matters. A dumpster rented for concrete that shows up at the disposal facility with wood in it is refused at the concrete rate: the sorting gets billed back. Is a dumpster permit called for in LaSalle?

On private property, no: the LaSalle block of the municipal procedure states in black and white that no permit is required to install a waste dumpster on private property, and it attaches not a single condition. On the public way, yes: a temporary occupancy permit is required, and “dumpsters” appears by name in the list of installations covered. A call to 514 708-2424 is usually enough to settle which of the two you are in.

What does occupying the street or a lane cost in LaSalle?

The borough publishes its schedule in plain sight, taxes included: $25 in review fees, no issuing fee, then a daily rate. Count $41 a day up to 49 m² of street or sidewalk, $102 from 50 to 99 m², and $35 in a lane or behind the sidewalk if the occupancy touches neither the sidewalk nor the street. The width of roadway obstructed adds on top, starting at $41 for under 3 m. For the exact total, Montreal shows an estimate in the summary of the online application.

What hours can you deliver or pick up the dumpster in LaSalle?

The LaSalle window is one of the widest on the island: work is allowed “and materials may be delivered between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m., every day of the week (except statutory holidays)”. Seven days out of seven, then, where Le Sud-Ouest bans Sundays and Verdun shuts at 5 p.m. on weekends. Our trucks roll Monday to Friday; book 24 to 48 hours ahead ideally, and same-day stays possible when a dumpster is free.

The ecocentre is right here in the borough — why rent a dumpster?

Because free stops at 12 m³ a year, or about 15.7 cubic yards. A 10-yard fits inside that quota, a 20-yard all but swallows it whole and a 40-yard runs past it. Add that everything is unloaded by arm, with no dump trailer and no hand from staff, and that a vehicle-and-trailer rig may not exceed 11 m — so, several round trips. The LaSalle ecocentre stays excellent for a weekend spent clearing the garage; the dumpster takes over once the volume climbs.

Will a dumpster fit in the sloping driveway of a semi-detached plex?

Often yes, provided you measure. The borough writes itself that “shallow driveways lead to encroachment onto public property”, a finding it used to ban temporary car shelters right across its territory — that ban does not cover dumpsters. A 10 or a 20-yard calls for a strip roughly 14 feet long by 8 wide, a 40-yard about twenty feet, without forgetting the clearance the truck needs for the lift. Useful marker: the 20-yard is about the size of a Dodge Caravan.

Can a dumpster stay on the roadway in the depths of a LaSalle winter?

Better avoided from November 16 to April 15. Here the permanent signage already carries the parking ban for snow-loading operations: nothing announces the work on site, and you have to phone the number shown on the panels to learn whether it is under way. A loading operation can be triggered from as little as 10 to 15 cm and can last six days, and the borough had more than 1,000 vehicles towed over the winter of 2024-2025. On private land, the question never comes up.

Can my business use LaSalle's municipal collection?

No. The LaSalle block is explicit: “only residents are entitled to this service”, with businesses, stores, schools, churches, embassies and other organizations having to deal with a private company. Even for household garbage, the borough accepts nothing but a rear-loading bin at a commercial address, front-loading being a private company's affair. One practical job-site point: a dumpster must never block the collectors' access to the bins on collection day.

Duplex country — and the driveway is short

In the 2016 census, 56.0% of LaSalle's 31,780 occupied private dwellings were apartments or flats in a duplex — 17,800 of them exactly — against only 4.0% single detached houses and 4.6% semi-detached ones. The borough draws the consequences itself in its snow-removal article: most homes there are “semi-detached plexes with a sloping parking space”, and “shallow driveways lead to encroachment onto public property”. Second decisive figure: half the housing stock (50.5%, or 16,800 dwellings) went up between 1961 and 1980, against 25.4% before 1961. Roofs, windows, basements and bathrooms of that vintage reach the end of their life at roughly the same moment — this is the second wave of renovation, not the restoration of a century-old plex. Add that 63% of workers drive to their job and the asphalt out front is rarely free. Hence the local reflex: pull out the tape measure before you book, knowing that a 10-yard saves not one inch of ground next to a 20-yard — it is only lower. If the driveway will not do, the question becomes the permit, handled further down.

An industrial and retail hub in the middle of a rebuild

LaSalle was a municipality from 1912 to 2001 before becoming a borough of Montreal on January 1, 2002, and it describes itself today as a major industrial centre and one of the leading retail hubs in Montreal: 400 companies and 1,000 places of business over 16.3 km². Carrefour Angrignon and the boulevard Newman axis make up what the borough calls one of the major commercial sectors in the west end of the island of Montreal. To the west, the detailed planning for the Secteur LaSalle Ouest (LaS-O), adopted by the borough council on December 12, 2023 around the train station, puts forward “the conservation of the industrial and railway heritage”: read for a contractor, that means buildings to repurpose and selective demolition, so 40-yard dumpsters and single-material dumpsters whenever concrete, brick or asphalt have to be kept apart. The borough stays a riverside place above all — the Lachine Rapids do lie within its territory, and the moulin Fleming, raised in 1827, remains its emblem. As for reviews, LaSalle has no Google listing of its own with us: the sector falls under our Montreal Google listing — 5.0 stars, 59 reviews as these lines are written.

November to April: the sign is already in the ground

LaSalle sits among the three boroughs whose permanent signage already carries the parking bans tied to snow-loading operations — the other two being Pierrefonds-Roxboro and Verdun. Nothing orange is necessarily planted to announce the work, then: Montreal's instruction is to phone the number shown on the panels to learn whether a ban is active, and any temporary sign that does go up overrides the permanent one. Winter signage stands from November 16 to April 15. Crews here clear 332 km of streets, 280 km of sidewalks and 25.6 km of bike paths; once 10 to 15 cm have fallen, a loading operation can be called and can run as long as six days. Over the winter of 2024-2025 the borough had more than 1,000 vehicles towed — and a dumpster left standing on the roadway blocks that same operation just as effectively. While it runs, 655 off-street relief parking spaces open at six locations, 63 of them at parc des Rapides, provided the vehicle moves along after 24 hours. Our seasonal advice comes down to one line: between mid-November and mid-April, plan the dumpster on private land.

Why the drop-off centre is not enough in LaSalle

Better still, it is one of the two addresses in the Montreal network where you may come back without anyone counting. To empty a garden shed, that is honestly where to go — we will not pretend otherwise. Six numbers say where it stops being enough.

That leaves the kerbside collection, and this is where the arithmetic tips. In LaSalle it is kept for households: “businesses, stores, schools, churches, embassies and other organizations must deal with a private company”. It stops at 3 m³ per address — about 3.9 cubic yards, when our smallest size holds 10 — with a maximum of 25 kg per box or receptacle, bundles no more than 50 cm across and 1 m long, and a flat ban on garbage bags, recycling bins and brown bins used as receptacles. Household garbage turns away wood, gypsum, brick, concrete, asphalt shingles, ceramic and stone outright. The dumpster therefore earns its place for two very precise reasons: the volume to be moved out, and being a business.
