Size is not the whole story: dumpsters are rented by material type. Each type goes to a different disposal facility — that is why mixed loads bring extra fees. One choice to make, five options:

Why it matters. A dumpster rented for concrete that shows up at the disposal facility with wood in it is refused at the concrete rate: the sorting gets billed back. Do I need a permit to place a dumpster in Dollard-des-Ormeaux?

Not for the dumpster itself, if it sits entirely on your built private lot — and Dollard-des-Ormeaux is one of the rare cities whose zoning says so in plain words: « a temporary container » is among the installations authorized during work, provided it stands outside the sight triangle — the same section giving 30 days after the end of construction to remove a temporary building (by-law R-2025-199, s. 76 and 78). The negative verification completes it: the closed list of certificates of authorization in by-law R-2026-217 includes none for a rental dumpster, and the 2026 fee by-law sets no such charge. Can I have the dumpster placed on the street in front of my house?

No. In Dollard-des-Ormeaux, « occupation of the public domain is prohibited without an authorization », which « takes the form of a permit whose issuance is approved by way of a resolution of the Municipal Council » (by-law R-2022-168, s. 2) — a regime built for permanent encroachments, with no published procedure for a seven-day dumpster. The city can have the installation removed at the owner's expense (s. 7), leaving objects liable to constitute a danger on a street is prohibited (by-law R-2009-053, s. 34), and a « harmful or noxious object » left in a public place costs 1,000 $ from the first offence (by-law 82-705, s. 11). So the spot is in your driveway — that is where we deliver.

Is it true that job-site debris must be in a container in Dollard-des-Ormeaux?

Yes — two by-laws require it. The nuisance by-law prohibits « the fact of leaving on a property construction refuse or waste, unless placed in closed containers » (by-law 2014-094, s. 7, 10°) — and « piles of earth, sand, rock, gravel or concrete on a property » are a nuisance in themselves (s. 7, 9°): the heap of rubble in the driveway is not a stage of the job, it is the offence. The waste by-law adds that the owner of a building under construction « must clear that building of construction waste », placed in metal containers (by-law 83-696, s. 9.2). In Dollard-des-Ormeaux, the dumpster is not a convenience: it is what makes the job site compliant.

Doesn't the city already pick up renovation debris?

Yes — and we would rather tell you, limits included. The special refuse collection, on request, is reserved for « minor renovation work done by residents, and not for work done by contractors ». It is free « up to 4.5 m³ (6 cu. yd) or two collections per year », offered from May 1 to October 31, and pick-up comes « within ten to fifteen business days »; materials must be sorted by type and set out loose, never in bags or boxes, and asphalt and roof shingles are refused. A bathroom sometimes fits inside those 6 yards; a full kitchen exceeds them, a roof exceeds them by the tonne. A 10 yard dumpster holds 7.6 m³: that is exactly the dividing line.

Can the ecocentre replace a dumpster?

For a car trunk, yes — but you have to leave town: Dollard-des-Ormeaux has no ecocentre and refers its residents to Saint-Laurent's, at 3535 rue Sartelon. A resident of the agglomeration gets 12 m³ free per year for construction debris; beyond that, 31 $ per cubic metre (rates consulted August 19, 2026). Good local news: the 15-visit yearly cap does not apply at Saint-Laurent, where visits are unlimited. In winter the ecocentre closes Sunday and Monday and opens 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For a job site the arithmetic is quick: a 10 yard box holds 7.6 m³, a 20 yard 15.3 m³ — more than the yearly allowance on its own — and a 40 yard 30.6 m³.

Why does the dumpster's spot depend on trees in Dollard-des-Ormeaux?

Because the local by-law protects trees not with a fixed radius but with a proportional perimeter: during work, a fence at least 1.2 m high must form around each tree a perimeter « of at least 8 times the diameter of the tree », and « construction materials as well as earth and debris must be placed outside the said fence » (by-law R-2007-023, s. 17). A mature maple with a 60 cm trunk commands nearly five metres of clearance. Felling a tree 10 cm in diameter or more requires a certificate of authorization, issued in closed cases only, with fines counted per tree. On lots planted in the 1960s, our drivers choose the dumpster's spot with the map of the trunks.

Will the dumpster damage my driveway?

It is the right question in a city where 62.1% of homes dated from 1961 to 1980 at the 2016 profile: plenty of original driveways — and changing their surface requires a certificate of authorization (110 $ for a redo), so preserving what is there pays. A mature maple with a 60 centimetre trunk thus commands nearly five metres of clearance. In practice: on these mature lots, the dumpster's spot is chosen with the map of the trunks, and we tell you at booking rather than once the truck is at the door.

The third is the age of the surfaces. 62.1% of the housing stock was built between 1961 and 1980, and 57.8% are detached houses, per the 2016 sociodemographic profile: plenty of original driveways — all the more since changing a driveway's surface requires a certificate of authorization here. Second: heavy vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers may not park in shopping centre lots outside store hours (by-law R-2009-053, s. 10) — logistics run on the manager's schedule. In multi-family buildings, zoning prohibits storing construction materials on balconies: the dumpster on the ground is the compliant storage. The 50 $ Libération Express credit rewards fast job sites: it applies when the dumpster is freed up within 48 hours of delivery, during the March-to-October high season.

In winter there is no Tempo shelter — but your snow stays on your side

Dollard-des-Ormeaux holds a rare winter distinction: temporary car shelters are prohibited across the entire territory (zoning R-2025-199, s. 79). A Dollard driveway never has to house a « Tempo », so the dumpster finds its place more easily than in neighbouring suburbs. The street, though, offers no fallback: parking is banned from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. year-round (by-law R-2009-053, s. 12), banned as well « during a snowfall » and « during snow removal or street maintenance » (s. 11) — and occupying the roadway with equipment requires an authorization passed by resolution of the municipal council.

What does get planned is the snow itself. Throwing, pushing or blowing it onto any public property is prohibited, and once the plough has passed, « it is each resident's responsibility to remove the snow in front of their driveway and pile it on their own property ». A dumpster badly placed in January blocks the only place that snow can go — our drivers know it and choose the spot accordingly, keeping a snow-clearing corridor. The territory is cleared in 13 sectors, a full pass taking about four hours, with boulevards Des Sources, Saint-Jean, De Salaberry, Brunswick and Sunnybrooke as priority 1: even the morning after a storm, the truck gets through.

Why the drop-off centre is not enough in Dollard-des-Ormeaux

Dollard-des-Ormeaux has no ecocentre on its territory. Reconstituted as a city on January 1, 2006 and part of the Montréal agglomeration, it refers its own residents to the Saint-Laurent ecocentre at 3535 rue Sartelon, in the neighbouring borough. Access is reserved for residents, property owners and businesses of the agglomeration, photo ID and proof of address less than three months old in hand. For a car trunk, it is the right address. Here is where the door closes.

At the curb, the fallback is narrow — and the city says so itself. « Household garbage » excludes by definition waste « from demolition, construction or renovation » as well as « rock, earth and cement » (by-law 83-696, s. 2); with the Tuesday collection, the only bulky items accepted are pieces of wood and metal « less than 1.2 m in length (4 ft) tied in bundles ». That leaves the special refuse collection, on request, which honestly helps a resident out: concrete, brick, gypsum, pavers, stone, earth and wood are accepted. But it is reserved for « minor renovation work done by residents, and not for work done by contractors », free « up to 4.5 m³ (6 cu. yd) or two collections per year », offered from May 1 to October 31 only, picked up « within ten to fifteen business days » — and it refuses asphalt and roof shingles, referred… to the ecocentre. A 10 yard dumpster holds 7.6 m³: the moment you fill it, you are past everything the city collects for free.
