Is a permit required to place a dumpster in Villeray, Saint-Michel or Parc-Extension?
Yes, from the moment it rests on public property: the VSMPE block names “des conteneurs” in its official list, and the public way takes in the bike path, the sidewalk and the alley every bit as much as the roadway. If it fits entirely on your own land, this permit does not apply — the borough, mind you, has published nothing yet about private land: its block displays “Renseignements à venir”. What does occupying a street or an alley cost in the borough?
The 2026 schedule asks $44 to issue and $98 to review, taxes not included, then $67 each day for a street or sidewalk occupancy of no more than 49 m², and $54 each day when the dumpster stays in the alley, behind the sidewalk or on unpaved ground. Five days therefore come to $477 in the street, $412 in the alley. A parking meter in the zone adds $23 per space per day, plus $45 to hood the first post.
How many days ahead does the permit have to be filed?
Two business days before the work starts, five where a street has to be closed or a lane obstructed. It is one of the shortest notice periods on the island: Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie, Le Plateau, Le Sud-Ouest, Saint-Léonard and Ville-Marie all require ten. The nuance to know: the borough sets a filing deadline, it does not undertake to process in two days. So send the application at the same time as the booking.
Can a dumpster be dropped in a green alley?
Often, though nothing is guaranteed in advance. The borough runs an active programme with Ville en vert: eight alleys completed and thirteen enhanced in 2024, five more in 2025, with 213.45 m² of asphalt dug out that year. Planters, furniture, trees and murals narrow the passage, while a 20-yard takes up about the size of a Dodge Caravan. We check the usable width with you before sending the truck, and the permit is still owed, at $54 a day.
Does the borough have an ecocentre of its own?
Yes: the Saint-Michel ecocentre, 2475, rue des Regrattiers, 514 872-0384. Mondays it stays shut. Between April 15 and October 14 its gate is open Tuesday through Sunday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; over the remaining months, Tuesday to Saturday only, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The ceiling of 15 visits a year for construction debris applies here — LaSalle and Saint-Laurent alone escape it — the vehicle-and-trailer rig has to stay under 11 metres, and the unloading is yours to do: nobody on site puts a hand to it.
Why not simply put the debris out with the bulky-item collection?
Because it stops at 2 m³ per address, the lowest ceiling of the nineteen boroughs, level with Montréal-Nord and Verdun, where nine others tolerate 5 m³. Two cubic metres are worth some 2.6 cubic yards: barely a quarter of a 10-yard, which a single demolished bathroom goes beyond. Add the 25 kg limit per receptacle, the one-metre board bundles, the ban on every plastic bag, and a service open to private individuals only.
What is the window for delivering or picking up a dumpster here?
The municipal text allows renovation and construction work, materials deliveries included, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and on statutory holidays, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The borough is the only one of the nineteen to file the statutory holidays in with the weekdays.
