Tearing down a shed in a weekend

A small shed comes down into a 10 yard dumpster — 3 to 4 pickup truck loads — and a regular shed into a 20 yard, about the size of a Dodge Caravan. Wood, sheet metal, shingles and whatever was stored inside all leave mixed in the same dry materials box. Two sizes cover almost every shed

A shed comes down in a weekend: big enough to justify a dumpster, small enough to be done by Sunday night. The one real decision comes before the first swing: the size of the box.

Small shed: the 10 yard. The tool shed, the single-door garden shed: 3 to 4 pickup truck loads of debris, no more. The box is 14 ft by 8 on the ground and 2.5 ft high — a low wall you load at arm's height, nothing thrown over a shoulder.

Regular shed: the 20 yard. Same rectangle on the ground — 14 ft by 8 — but 5 ft high, for 6 to 8 pickup truck loads: about the size of a Dodge Caravan. It is the size the size guide recommends for tearing down a shed, and its margin absorbs the part everyone forgets: whatever is still stored inside comes down too. A large shed packed to the rafters, though, can tip into the 40 yard — the pickup-load count decides.

Between the two, one useful rule: dropping to the 10 yard frees no room in the driveway — the footprint is the same. You pick the 10 for the volume, never for the space.

What goes in the box — and what never does

A demolished shed is the textbook case for the mixed dry materials dumpster: just about everything it is made of leaves mixed, no sorting. The exceptions fit on one hand — and they get settled before you start.

Into the same box, no sorting

  • The wood — framing, walls, floor, doors and shelving: most of the shed.
  • The whole roof — asphalt shingles, sheet metal (metal rides with the wood), paper and membranes.
  • The rest — drywall, insulation, plastic, and the furniture that was sleeping in there.

Never in that box

  • The concrete slab. Concrete rents its own dumpster — slipped into the mixed box, it flips the whole load to the sorting rate. Concrete, soil, asphalt: why a separate dumpster explains the rule.
  • Tires — even the wheelbarrow's or the trailer's stored inside: not accepted in any dumpster.
  • Chemicals — paint, solvents, oils, propane, aerosols, acids: the classic back shelf of a shed. Pull them out and set them aside before demolition.

Shingle roof? Count your bundles

If the roof is sheet metal, nothing to calculate: it goes down with the rest. If it is asphalt shingles, one reflex before ordering — shingles weigh more than they look, and their weight can be worked out ahead with two numbers: one bundle covers 32 sq ft of roof, and 25 bundles weigh 1 ton. Divide the roof area by 32 and the answer lands in bundles.

For a shed, the verdict is reassuring: it takes 800 sq ft of roof to reach the 25 bundles of a ton — no shed comes close. The ton included with the 10 yard absorbs the shingles along with the rest of the building, and the 20 yard's 2 included tons leave even more margin. The weekend, top to bottom

The rule that keeps a shed demolition safe fits in one sentence: you take it apart in the reverse order it was built — roof, then walls, then floor — and nobody works underneath what is still to come down. Laid over a weekend, it looks like this:

Do the roof shingles go in the same dumpster as the wood?

Yes. The dry materials box takes wood, shingles, metal, drywall and insulation mixed together, no sorting. Just count their weight: one bundle of shingles covers 32 sq ft and 25 bundles weigh a ton — a shed roof is nowhere near that.

My shed sits on a concrete slab. Does it go in the same box?

No. Concrete rents its own dumpster because it goes to a different disposal facility: slipped into the mixed box, it flips the whole load to the sorting rate. If the slab is going too, say so on the quote — we look at whether two boxes beat one.
